Teaching English in non-English speaking countries is a lifestyle not without difficulties. English language teachers face cultural differences, and this can take a toll on the teacher’s ability to work effectively.

There can be language barriers, problems with access to medical care, cultural and religious differences, and these can all present problems. Researching the culture of the country you’re going to teach English in is a good start, but many international travelers are caught off guard when they first arrive by the vast differences.

Teaching English - certification

English teaching certification can be gained through full-time 4-week programs, or longer part-time programs, both of which carry internationally-recognized qualifications. CertTESOL (certificate in TESOL)and CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) certifications are internationally recognized. Externally assessed by the British Council, these english teaching qualifications are accepted in more than 100 countries worldwide.

Language Schools around the world run international certificate programs, though the qualifications required vary from country to country.

In some countries, you can teach english without a BA degree or even a teaching certificate.

Those seeking employment with private language schools, however, will most likely need a certificate based on successful completion of a course consisting of a minimum of 100 hours, usually including about 6 hours of observed teaching practice.

Many language schools require their teachers to have specific English teaching certification, or to complete in-house training programs so as to assess them on a more personal level.
